It costs £7,000 to fund a Street project for 12 months. We need your help to inspire thousands more children through cricket. Street gives young people the chance to have their own cricket club all year round, right on their doorstep. The ECB are match-funding donations, meaning anything we receive will go twice as far! In total, we need to raise £350,000 to fund 100 new projects.

WHY NOW?

• 3 in 10 children now live in poverty¹
• More than half of children are not active enough²
• By the end of primary school, a third of children are overweight or obese³
• 1 in 6 children aged five to 16 are likely to have a mental health problem⁴

We currently have 200 Street projects providing opportunities for young people in deprived communities to reap the physical, mental and social benefits that cricket has to offer. It’s an amazing programme, but we need to do more.

MAKING AN IMPACT

Chance to Shine Street projects are clubs that our participants can call their own. We place projects in areas where children and young people have fewer opportunities to play, in venues that are safe and easily accessible, often within walking distance for participants. Sessions are free, run all year round and coaches focus on developing life skills as well as a passion for cricket. With 79% of Street participants from ethnically diverse communities, the programme ensures that cricket really is a game for everyone.

The challenge is that thousands of young people living in some of the most deprived areas of the country simply don’t have a Street project nearby.

WHERE CRICKET IS NEEDED MOST 

We have identified 100 communities that we know need our help most. All are in the 30% most deprived areas of the country, lack local cricket opportunities and have a high percentage of inactive children.

DEPRIVATION

All 100 locations are considered the most deprived in the country according to the government’s Indices of Multiple Deprivation, such as County Durham where 50% of the population lives in an area where there could be a Street project.

ETHNICITY

We know that young people from ethnically diverse backgrounds are less likely to be active or have an opportunity to play regularly in their community. We will create these opportunities where they are most needed. For example, with a girls only project in an area of Derby where 79% of people are from a diverse community.

INACTIVITY

Physical inactivity is a huge concern with 55% of children not getting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day – there are some areas of the country where this rises to 70% of children. Inactivity levels have been assessed for each of the 100 locations ensuring we are targeting the areas most in need. For example, in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, where 65% of children are inactive.
