Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week kicks off in Camden One of the legends of modern cricket, Kumar Sangakkara visited a Chance to Shine Street cricket project in Camden on Monday 19 June. Sangakkara made a special appearance to join the eight 16 year olds from North London as part of Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week. Sangakkara, who is currently playing for Surrey CCC, took part in some Street cricket - played with a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape. He gave the young cricketers some of his top batting tips and answered their questions about his record-breaking career. Sangakkara recently became only the 37th batsman in history to score 100 first-class and one-day hundreds. Chance to Shine Street is provided free in over 150 locations across the country. It is a fun, fast-paced version of the game where innings last 20 minutes and can be played in any location. Speaking at the event, Kumar Sangakkara said It's been great to join Chance to Shine here in Camden to start Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week. The kids have a great sense of community and they're having a lot of fun. It's great that the children have the opportunity to get out and have fun and the smiles on their faces are lovely to see. Cricket gives them some new skills that will help them in the classroom and beyond. Kassim, aged 11 said It was really good to meet Sangakkara, I was very excited to meet an international star. I like to come here and play tapeball cricket, work on batting and play with my friends. Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week is an initiative to showcase the work of the national charity, Chance to Shine. The organisation aims to use the power of cricket to raise aspirations and provide young people across the country with the opportunity to play and learn through the sport. Manage Cookie Preferences
