Schoolchildren take over the Home of Cricket for the MCC Spirit of Cricket Open Day Over 500 children from schools around the country visited Lord's on Tuesday 6 June as part of the annual MCC Spirit of Cricket Open Day. The children were joined by Charlotte Edwards, James Taylor and Chris Woakes as they took part in a range of different activities at cricket's most famous venue. Mark Nicholas led a mass assembly for the school children which culminated in an exciting bowl-off between teams led by Chris and James with Charlotte adjudicating and keeping behind the stumps. The assembly was halted at 11am for a minute's silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the recent attack in London. The assembly taught the children about the values of cricket, focusing on teamwork, perseverance and fair play. Afterwards, the pupils took part in a range of activities including a tour of the Lord's Pavilion, cricket games at the MCC academy as well taking part in a Junior Journalist workshop. Speaking at the event Chris Woakes said It's great to be here today with Chance to Shine celebrating the values of the MCC Spirit of Cricket. It's a lovely opportunity to give something back and help the work that the charity does. I went to a state school and we didn't really get the opportunity to play cricket and it's very important that kids are getting that chance to give it a go and to learn the values of the sport that will help them throughout their life. Carly, 10 from Oak Tree Primary in Nottingham, who starred in the assembly bowl off said I was shaking when I was going up to bowl the ball but then I got the middle stump straight away. I was so happy that I managed to do it and my teammates were too, it was a great feeling. Out of ten I'd give today a 10! more about the MCC Spirit of Cricket here. Manage Cookie Preferences
