Keeping children active during the COVID-19 outbreak The COVID-19 outbreak has had an unprecedented impact on people across the world. Whilst we all adapt to our new circumstances, Chance to Shine remain champions of physical activity and the numerous benefits it has for children's physical and mental wellbeing. Following the decision to suspend all delivery and the closure of schools across the UK, the charity has sought to continue to support teachers and parents to help children remain active. In order to support parents and children at home to maintain physical activity, the Chance to Shine team have put together weekly sessions linked to lesson plans available on the online Schools' Portal. Each session consists of an individual and pairs activity that links to a key learning outcome from the National Curriculum. The activities are designed to allow children to take part at home regardless of space and require very little equipment. The first two activities launched on Monday 23 March, were based on the 'Cool Catcher' session and tested children on their throwing and catching techniques. There was an excellent response on social media with children (and a few adults!) showing their best attempt at the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Catch challenge. With schools remaining open for children of key workers, the charity have also maintained regular communication with teachers, encouraging them to fit in a Chance to Shine session using a lesson from the Schools' Portal. To support learning in English and maths, parents and teachers have also been encouraged to engage with some of the 'Learn' lessons available on the portal. In the second session, BBC Test Match Special Commentator Alison Mitchell challenged children to try out the 'Crazy Commentator' activity. The lesson encourages children to develop their presentation skills by commentating on the exciting Super Over from the 2019 Cricket World Cup final. The Chance to Shine team are also in the process of designing home workouts for our Street Participants to help them stay active during this period.
