While England and Australia battled it out at Wormsley last week (14 August) on the last day of the women's Ashes Test, Ormskirk School from Lancashire and South Dartmoor Community College in Devon also had their chance to shine on the same pitch as their heroines.

The two teams took part in the Cricket Foundation's Chance to Compete national girls' final after watching England and Australia battle to a draw in the Test match.

The final itself was a competitive affair on a good but slightly damp wicket. Ormskirk prevailed in a best of three series, after winning a nail biting final game by three runs to win the competition 2-1.

The England women's Captain Charlotte Edwards, and the England team watched on and Charlotte and team member Danielle Wyatt took over the microphone to commentate on the action.

Talking about the final Charlotte said, "I was really impressed by the standard of cricket. Both teams gave a great account for themselves, and it was good to see the game played in the right spirit. I hope I've just seen some future stars!"

Laura Goff, coach of Ormskirk School said "The girls are incredible, I'm not sure how they managed to hold their nerve, after a very convincing win in the first game to then narrowly losing the second by two runs and then in the third and final game hold on to a marginal lead, winning by three runs! Credit must go to the opposition South Dartmoor School, their players fought to the end and showed great spirit and sportsmanship."

Chance to Compete is a national secondary school competition aimed at giving school children an opportunity to play competitive cricket. Matches are played in under an hour and all participants play a significant part in the game. This year there was an under 13 girls' tournament for the first time and the final was played on the same wicket as the Ashes Test after play finished on the fourth day.
