The excitement had started a week ago for Vaughan Primary School, Harrow. ESPNcricinfo and Chance to Shine sponsored by Brit Insurance had given all Chance to Shine participants to win a training session at Lord's followed by a tour of the Home of Cricket. It was Ben Hooper, a year 5 pupil at the school who won it for his classmates with his knowledge of England captains.

The session, saw the youngsters taken through a fun session by former England players Peter Such and Phil DeFreitas. Culminating in a big game, this provided the perfect opportunity for the school's keen cricketers to show their worth to international. Time was running out and one from one was required. The fielding team moaned as Haaris Malik, widely regarded as the best cricketer in the school by peers and coach, took to the crease. The batting team thought they had it in the bag.

One man stood between them and victory – the bowler. The fielders then realised that Haaris may be no match for their bowler. Whispers scuttled round the outfield. Confidence ushered amidst a few squeals of building tension.

So DeFreitas came off his (relatively, given the circumstances) long run up to bowl to a determined youngster who knows the odds, like the ball, have swung.

Stumps clatter. Haaris looks round and shrugs knowing he's been beaten by the better man and that it will not always be so. Pats on the back of sympathy from his team-mates make up for the euphoria of the opposition.

Before taking a well deserved lunch Ben, a national swimmer when he's not playing cricket, said, "It's been a great day. His classmates conferred, and everyone agreed the highlight of the day had been Haaris's bails being knocked off by a laughing," smiling DeFreitas.

If you missed out on this competition, why not enter our competition to win the chance to play on the Lord's outfield this summer, during the England v India Test match. This once in a lifetime experience is open to all junior school age children.
