Six in the City - Preliminary Round 3 On Tuesday 14 June, the third and final qualifying round of the Six in the City tournament took place at Dulwich College. On a beautiful sunny evening it was Brewin Dolphin and defending champions, Linklaters, who progress to the finals, to be held at the HAC on 8 September. In the opening round of matches, Linklaters convincingly beat Charlemagne Capital, posting a first innings score of 70-2, before restricting Charlemagne Capital to 57-5 in their innings. Linklaters' Brett Hopcroft impressed scoring 26 with the bat and a wicket with the ball. Meanwhile on the other pitch Brewin Dolphin set Spreadex an impressive target of 78, which they fell short of, finishing their innings on 58. There were notable contributions from Brewin Dolphin' Andrew Davies (26 not out) and James Hamilton (21 not out) while Spreadex's Ben Ramsey (21) and Ben Sadler (26 not out) couldn't quite steer their team home to victory. The game of the day proved to be in the second round of matches where the two big hitting sides of Brewin Dolphin and Linklaters met. Linklaters batted first and after losing two calamitous wickets off the first two balls (both run outs), recovered to post a respectable score of 56. Again, in was Brett Hopcroft who was the stand out batsman for Linklaters finishing on 28 not out. In reply, Brewin Dolphin's opening pair of Sanath Dandeniya (22 not out) and Andrew Davies (21) guided their team home with 4 balls to spare. On the other pitch, Spreadex were reduced to 44 all out by an impressive bowling display by Charlemagne Capital. Charlemagne took just 4.1 overs to knock off the runs with Paul McCann top scoring with 19. The final round of matches saw Brewin Dolphin and Linklaters book their places in the finals. Linklaters posted a colossal 87-1 in their innings with telling contributions from Asad Ahmed (29 not out) and Harry Beardall (25 not out). In reply Spreadex amounted their biggest score of the day, but their 68-1 was not enough for victory. James McFadden top scored with 25 not out. Now that all qualifying rounds have now been completed, attention turns to the finals day to be played at the HAC on 8 September. PWC, Pearson, M&G, IG Index, Linklaters and Brewin Dolphin will battle it out to be named the Six in the City champions for 2011.
